What is Ethanol?

Ethanol, ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, is made predominantly from renewable sources such as corn and sugar cane. Ethanol is the same alcohol that is in alcoholic beverages consumed all over the world.  Ethanol-blended fuel reduces carbon monoxide and greenhouse gases and is added to gasoline at a 10% blend to replace MTBE (Methyl tertiary-butyl ether), a ground water contaminate.

Ethanol is beneficial because it is environment-friendly, bio-degradable, non-toxic, water soluble and renewable.  Ethanol does not harm drinking water resources. Another blend of a clean, domestically produced fuel is known as E85.

E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline and reduces harmful emissions coming out of our tailpipes by:

bulletCarbon Dioxide by 40%
bulletVolatile Organic Compounds by 15%
bulletNitrogen Oxide by 10%
bulletParticulate Matter by 20%

Currently there are over 130,000 flexible fuel vehicles in the State of New Jersey that can use this alternative fuel to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, combat global warming, and reduce auto emissions, the single most serious air pollution problem in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states.  This innovative and renewable industrial revolution will create a multitude of new good-paying jobs right here in the USA.

Moreover, in the Northeast states such as NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE and VA, there are over 700,000 flexible fuel vehicles capable of using a home grown USA fuel.  If we can drink it, why can’t we use it to fuel our cars when it’s made from our own farmers’ fields? Do we want to feed our farmers or feed middle-east terrorism?  The production and use of biofuels for transportation is not a new idea and, in fact, has been around as long as we have had cars and trucks.

Corn ethanol is invaluable in getting us started on a path to reducing our dependence on gasoline.  Corn ethanol is clearly the best available realistic alternative to gasoline.  Ethanol significantly reduces petroleum use by more than 90%. Corn ethanol is providing the US with an essential and invaluable service. It is priming the pump for other forms of alternative fuels, whether it is ethanol or other biofuels.

Corn ethanol leads us down a progressive path toward improving technologies. An established market for corn ethanol will accelerate the introduction of cellulosic ethanol, a type of biofuel produced from a variety of plant material.   Other feedstocks (i.e. sorghum, sugar beets, hulless barley, potatoes and other agricultural wastes) can also be used to make ethanol.  In the future, 5 to 10 years away, ethanol will be able to be made out of corn stalks, corn cobs, switchgrass, wood and other waste sources when cellulosic technology becomes commercially available, feasible and cost effective.

Every ethanol plant being built today will able to be modified to use cellulosic feedstocks as well as renewable agricultural products to produce ethanol.  With this new technology we can reach our goal of food, fuel, and animal feed in a sustainable way.

Corn ethanol will be around for a long time. Cellulosic ethanol is still in the future but will eventually compliment corn ethanol production up to 36 billion gallons a year.

2008 Indy 500 Pace Car to be an E85 Corvette

History will be made at the 2008 Indianapolis 500 when a customized Corvette Z06 E85 concept that runs on E85 ethanol fuel, a domestically produced alternative fuel similar to the E100 fuel that powers all of the race cars in the IndyCar Series, will be one of the official pace cars. It will be driven during the race’s pace lap by two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Emerson Fittipaldi. (Race scheduled for February 17, 2007)

Benefits of Ethanol:

Performance

bulletAuto manufacturers approve fuel enriched with up to 10% ethanol for all cars
bulletFlex-fuel vehicles are designed to run on E85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) — the cleanest-burning, renewable fuel available today
bulletBy looking at your vehicle’s fuel cap or VIN #, you can tell if it's a flex-fuel vehicle — meaning it can run on regular gasoline, 10% ethanol-enriched fuel or E85
bulletFuel enriched with 10% ethanol is manufacturer-approved for use in small engines, including power equipment, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and outboard motors
bulletEthanol is the highest-performance fuel on the market, with an octane rating of 113 in its pure form
bulletEthanol-enriched fuel contains more oxygen — so it burns cleaner
bulletFuel enriched with 10% ethanol burns cleaner, helping to remove gummy deposits in the fuel system so engines can run with optimal performance
bulletEnriching fuel with 10% ethanol helps it to burn cleaner and at a cooler temperature, which can add to engine longevity

Environment

bulletEthanol is a clean-burning, renewable fuel
bulletE85 is the cleanest burning fuel available on the market today
bullet10% ethanol-enriched fuel reduces carbon monoxide from gasoline
bulletThe use of 10% ethanol-enriched fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 12 – 19% compared with conventional gasoline, according to Argonne National Laboratory
bulletEthanol reduces tailpipe fine particulate matter emissions. These emissions pose a threat to those with respiratory ailments
bulletEthanol is biodegradable, meaning it won't harm groundwater in the event of a spill

American made

bulletEthanol is blended into almost 50% of the U.S. fuel supply
bulletEthanol is made from crops grown in America, primarily corn
bulletToday there are more than 110 ethanol plants across the country
bulletEthanol replaces gasoline that would require the use of 600,000 barrels of oil a day
bulletThe United States has the capacity to produce over 7 billion gallons of ethanol
bulletThe U.S. ethanol industry supported the creation of over 160,000 jobs in all sectors of the economy in 2005, boosting household income by $6.7 billion
